Master of Arts in General and Applied Linguistics (GAL)

  • A three-year program in linguistics and applied linguistics of English and Japanese languages. All students must take five compulsory courses and take one of the following pathways for specialist studies and research:
    1. Theoretical Linguistics
    2. Applied Linguistics
    3. English for Business
    4. Linguistics and Translation Studies
    5. English Language Teaching and Teaching Technology
    6. Corpus Linguistics
    7. Sociolinguistics
    8. Japanese Language and Cultural Studies:
    Main courses offered: phonological theory, generative syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics, research methods for applied linguistics, second language acquisition and learning, teaching English as a foreign language, testing, technology in language teaching, business English stylistics, discourse analysis for business, selected readings in economics, trade, marketing and management, Japanese linguistics and applied linguistics, Japanese culture, comparative studies of Japanese and Chinese culture and literature, translation theory and practice, intercultural communication.
  • Students are required to submit a thesis of about 15,000 words in English on a topic approved by the supervisor.
